The Clover Hill Foods Story
Clover Hill Foods provides customized distribution solutions for delis, bakeries, markets, grocery stores, and food service operators.
Our company has a rich and diverse history. Our history is really a story of several businesses.
- Clover Hill Foods was founded in 1973 by the Virgi family. The company focused on the egg and dairy product distribution business. Over time the product line grew to include deli cheeses and deli meats. The customer base included supermarkets, grocery stores and sandwich shops.
- The John Groves Company was founded in 1944 and grew to become the region’s largest supplier to the ice cream shop industry. Clover Hill Foods acquired the John Groves Company in late 1994.
- Portion Pak Frozen Foods Inc. supplied products to bars, taverns and restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. Portion Pak Frozen Foods was acquired in 1998.
- In January 1999 we acquired the bakery ingredients distribution business from Byrnes & Kiefer Co. which retained its bakery manufacturing business.
- Murphy Flour Company and North Star Cheese merged to become Murphy/North Star and supplied area pizza shops and bakeries. We acquired the business in October 2000.
- Seafood Direct is the primary fish and shrimp supplier to many restaurants and clubs in western Pennsylvania. We acquired the business in 2011.
- Steubenville Fruit Co. started as a produce company and expanded into broadline foodservice. The company has supplied foodservice operators in the Ohio Valley for over 60 years. We acquired certain assets of Steubenville Fruit in January 2012. This increased our territory and our product offerings.
Today, Clover Hill Foods operates as a unified source of supply to Delis, Bakeries, Markets, Grocery Stores and Food Service.
